Korean comics first emerged under Japanese influence during the colonial period. However, after independence, Korea adopted the left-to-right reading direction, in line with the Hangeul writing system.
This choice was not merely technical but part of an effort to strengthen Korean identity. The popularity of manhwa skyrocketed in the mid-2010s, alongside the development of digital platforms and through webtoons.
The manhwa industry, especially the webtoon sector, has strict regulations regarding physical violence. That is why we often see knives or sharp weapons with blurred parts or replaced by black shapes, to ensure that the content remains safe for younger readers.
Very popular themes in Korea include reincarnation, beauty, and social status—a reflection of competitive Korean society.
The main difference between novels and manhwa lies in their format: novels are text-based (written) and rely on the reader’s imagination, while manhwa are full-color South Korean comic books. Manhwa typically feature more visually striking action scenes, better-developed characters, and more thrilling endings than their novel counterparts.
Currently, manhwa is very popular in its digital, full-color, vertically-scrolled format (webtoon), read on cell phones or computers.
Spoiler Under the Oak Tree Chapter 173
Maximilian (Maxi) is the eldest daughter of the Duke of Croix, who has endured constant physical and psychological abuse from her father, causing her to grow up as a girl who stutters and lacks self-confidence. When the Duke was ordered by the king to fight a rampaging dragon, he refused and forced Maxi to marry Riftan Calypse—a low-ranking knight—so that Riftan would go to war in his place.
After spending an awkward wedding night together, Riftan immediately set off for the battlefield. Three years passed without any news, leaving Maxi living in fear that she would be divorced due to rumors circulating that Riftan would marry a princess after successfully slaying the dragon.
Riftan returned as the kingdom’s most famous hero. Instead of divorcing Maxi, Riftan came to pick up his wife and take her to live in his castle in Anatol. It turned out that Riftan deeply valued their wedding vows and loved Maxi dearly, even though his way of expressing it tended to be stiff and overprotective.
In Anatol, Maxi learns to adapt to her new, loving environment. Gradually, her fears and trauma begin to fade. Driven by her love for Riftan, Maxi works hard to prove herself useful by studying magic and managing the castle, striving to become a worthy wife for the hero.
