Geoffrey Rush Will Return as Captain Barbossa in Pirates of the Caribbean 6 Under One Condition

--

ASTON OTONITY – Geoffrey Rush hinted at the possibility of returning as Captain Hector Barbossa in “Pirates of the Caribbean 6,” nearly a decade after the franchise’s last film. However, the actor made it clear that he would only return if the story offered Barbossa a valid reason for his comeback.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly at the 2026 Toronto International Film Festival, Rush acknowledged that enough time has passed since his last appearance. He also emphasized that he doesn’t want Barbossa’s return to seem like an easy attempt to bring back a popular character.

Rush’s comments are particularly noteworthy because Barbossa has already died twice throughout the franchise. The character was killed by Jack Sparrow in *The Curse of the Black Pearl* before eventually returning, while his second apparent death occurred in *Dead Men Tell No Tales*, when he sacrificed himself to save his daughter Carina.

The actor believes that another return could still work if the script came up with a creative explanation. He compared the possibility to Shakespearean storytelling, citing Hamlet’s father who appears as a ghost, and suggested that Barbossa could potentially return.

Rush isn’t the only member of the original cast interested in another “Pirates of the Caribbean” adventure. Orlando Bloom recently told Entertainment Weekly that he still asks about a sixth movie and, from time to time, talks with Johnny Depp.

Producer Jerry Bruckheimer has also confirmed that there have been discussions with Depp about his return as Jack Sparrow. However, it’s still unclear exactly what role Depp would play in the next film, with reports suggesting that the new story might give Margot Robbie’s character a more prominent role.

Disney is developing a script centered on a completely fresh cast of young pirate characters. There were rumors that the plot would focus on the story of Jack Sparrow’s child or a new female character.

In addition to the main reboot, there was a separate script prepared specifically for Margot Robbie to star in, with a story dominated by female characters, although the status of this project was in limbo on the production table for a while.

The story for this sixth film is being written by Ted Elliott (the original screenwriter for the first through fourth films) in collaboration with Craig Mazin (creator of the series *The Last of Us*). The studio promises that the script they’ve created is highly unique and compelling, even though it takes a different narrative approach from the previous installments.

Since this is a complete reboot, the iconic character of Captain Jack Sparrow, played by Johnny Depp, will certainly not be the main character in this new timeline.

Pirates of the Caribbean 6 Synopsis: As of now, Disney has not released an official synopsis for Pirates of the Caribbean 6 because the film project is confirmed to be a reboot (starting a new story from scratch).

Producer Jerry Bruckheimer has confirmed that they chose the reboot route so that production wouldn’t have to wait for the availability of certain original actors. Therefore, the official plot details and synopsis are still being kept under wraps.
