Manhwa is the Korean term for comics or graphic novels, which literally means “sketched drawing.” Outside of Korea, the term manhwa refers specifically to comics originating in South Korea.
Currently, manhwa is very popular in its digital, full-color, vertically-scrolled format (webtoon), read on cell phones or computers. Unlike Japanese manga, which is generally in black and white, manhwa—especially in the webtoon format—is usually presented in full color.
Korean comics first emerged under Japanese influence during the colonial period. However, after independence, Korea adopted the left-to-right reading direction, in line with the Hangeul writing system.
This choice was not merely technical but part of an effort to strengthen Korean identity. The popularity of manhwa skyrocketed in the mid-2010s, alongside the development of digital platforms and through webtoons.
The manhwa industry, especially the webtoon sector, has strict regulations regarding physical violence. That is why we often see knives or sharp weapons with blurred parts or replaced by black shapes, to ensure that the content remains safe for younger readers.
Spoiler What Happens on Little Mushroom
The main character of this story is no ordinary human, but rather An Zhe, a small mushroom that mutated in a dangerous region known as The Abyss. An Zhe consumed the body of a dying human youth named An Ze and absorbed his memories and human form. An Zhe’s primary mission in life is very simple yet vital to his survival: to recover his precious spores, which had previously been taken by a human expedition team.
In search of his spores, An Zhe recklessly disguises himself as a human and heads to the human base (Northern Base). At this base, the law is ruthlessly enforced. Humans are extremely paranoid about heterogeneous infections (mutations). Anyone who is injured or exhibits strange behavior can be immediately executed on the spot without trial if suspected of being contaminated or infected by an alien parasite.
An Zhe’s greatest obstacle is Lu Feng, the base’s Arbitrator or Supreme Judge. Lu Feng has the bloody duty of screening and killing anyone found to no longer be a pure human. He possesses an extraordinarily sharp and cold intuition.
Ironically, however, the spores that An Zhe had lost turned out to be in Lu Feng’s own possession. An Zhe is thus forced to continue getting close to the most feared judge for the sake of his mission, all while trying to hide his true identity as a fungus.
