One Piece 1196: Revealing Sanji's Greatest Weakness

Chapter 1196 of the manga, titled “Love That Longs for Death Is Worthless,” focuses on the confrontation between Sanji and Killingham, which causes the Straw Hat chef to recall his training in the Kingdom of Kamabakka during the time skip. Although Sanji manages to land repeated blows on his opponent, Killingham mocks him, reminding him that he can continuously regenerate his wounds, while Sanji will simply grow exhausted in the end. The God Knight even provokes him by pointing out that he lacks Conqueror’s Haki, but Sanji refuses to give up: his captain believes in him, and he has no intention of letting him down.

To end the battle, Killingham used his ability to tap into Sanji’s deepest fears and turn them into a nightmare. However, instead of his brothers from Germa 66 appearing, the enemy was confronted by a terrifying version of Emporio Ivankov—the man who had tortured the chef during his training. Killingham merged with this figure and, taking advantage of Sanji’s confusion, sent him flying with a kick. And, strangely enough, that blow triggered a flashback to one of the most important lessons he had learned several years earlier.

A flashback takes us back to the Kingdom of Kamabakka, where Sanji fought against local masters to obtain 99 important recipes. Although he managed to win, he always ended up injured, which greatly worried Ivankov. His mentor scolded him for fighting recklessly and taking hits he could have easily avoided. Sanji himself insisted that the only thing that mattered was winning, but Ivankov warned him that neglecting his own defense would ultimately backfire. No matter how many injuries he could endure, sooner or later he would reach his limit and would no longer be able to protect the people he loved most.

Sanji believes he would gladly die for Nami and Robin, but Ivankov argues that love that longs for death is pointless. For him, loving others also means learning to love and protect oneself. If Sanji continues to sacrifice himself in that way, he will eventually lose the strength needed to save the people he cares about. At that moment, the chef rejected his words, unable to understand that taking care of himself was also part of his responsibility.

Back in the present, Sanji recalls those lessons and his teammates, who have always appreciated his cooking and all his contributions to the team. Although he briefly wondered if he had reached the limit Ivankov spoke of, he knows he is no longer the boy his family once hated. His past doesn’t define his worth: it’s his friends who have shown just how important he is to them. As he reflects on how to become stronger, Ivankov’s nightmare fades, and Killingham returns to his normal form.

Sanji managed to get to his feet and, after lighting a cigarette, watched Killingham from the roof of a house in Elbaph and warned him that he would never hit him again. The chef also explained that he didn’t care that his rival was a Sky Dragon: he couldn’t stand that Killingham had come to the land of his protectors and treated its people with contempt and an air of superiority. Finally, he called him a “horse-man” and prepared to resume the fight with renewed determination, implying that he had finally learned his lesson from Ivankov.
