A '90s Zombie Game That Came Out 4 Years Before Resident Evil Is Now Officially Available on Steam!

ASTONITY - A forgotten survival horror game is finding a new home on Steam, and fans of the genre won’t want to miss it. Developer FairyTale and publisher FAKKU have officially launched a Steam page for Dead of the Brain.

This classic survival horror title is currently scheduled to arrive on Steam on October 30, offering gamers the perfect horror experience to enjoy just in time for Halloween.

34 Years Later, Dead of the Brain Returns

Originally released in 1992 for the PC-98, FM Towns, MSX2, X68000, and PC Engine Super CD-ROM² systems, Dead of the Brain was developed by FairyTale as a precursor to the modern survival horror genre.

While primarily a point-and-click adventure game, it frequently incorporates quick-time events, creating a genuine sense of urgency that requires a degree of skill to navigate—lest players face the dreaded "Game Over" screen.

Dead of the Brain puts players in the role of Cole, a man caught in the midst of a zombie outbreak triggered by experiments conducted by his close friend, Dr. Cooger.

Although the game received generally positive reviews upon its release—even spawning two follow-ups, Dead of the Brain 2 and Marine Philt, the following year—it is also widely regarded as being incredibly "cheesy."

The official description for Dead of the Brain reads: "On one fateful night, the protagonist, Cole, receives a phone call from his friend, Dr. Cooger.

The mad scientist has created what he calls a 'resurrection serum,' designed to bring the dead back to life... Sure, the serum does bring the dead back, but they return with no trace of their former selves—only an insatiable hunger for BRAINS!"

The game’s description continues: "When a test subject escapes from confinement, chaos ensues—literally. The dead rise from their graves as the city is overrun by terrifying zombies!

Thus begins a struggle for survival for Cole and his companions—a desperate battle to save the world from a catastrophe of their own making. Will Cole survive this nightmare, or will he end up joining the ranks of the undead?"

The re-release of Dead of the Brain couldn't be better timed—not only does it coincide with Halloween, but it also aligns with a resurgence of interest in the genre, fueled by the recently released Resident Evil film from writer-director Zach Cregger.

The movie hit theaters on September 18 and has quickly established itself as another successful video game-to-film adaptation.

Departing from previous Resident Evil films, this new installment stars Austin Abrams as Bryan, a medical courier who finds himself caught in the middle of an outbreak in Raccoon City.

Upon its release, Resident Evil garnered widespread acclaim and has grossed over $253 million against a $75 million budget during its theatrical run to date. Dead of the Brain will be available for purchase on Steam starting October 30.
